Carrabassett Valley Academy Sophomore, Luke Kearing, is the 2018 U.S. Ski U16 Overall National Champion in Alpine ski racing.The towering 15-year-old, who hails from Carrabassett Valley, has had an impressive season –showcasing his dedication and passion for the sport by hitting the podium in nearly all of his races. Luke dominated at the Eastern Championships [held at Stowe Mountain, VT in mid-March], throwing down consistently fast runs and landing on the podium not once, but three times throughout the competition. But following that event is when things really started to heat up on the cold steeps of Sugarloaf Mountain.
The National Strength and Conditioning Association's (NSCA) All-American Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year program recognizes collegiate and high school athletes whose athletic accomplishments reflect their dedication to strength training and conditioning. Athletes are also chosen for their academic and personal accomplishments and their integrity as student-athletes. There are 500 All-American Athletes of the Year for the 2017-2018 school year, representing over 230 high schools and colleges.CVA Junior and Boardercross athlete, Emma Downing has been recognized as an NSCA All-American. The 16-year-old is racing in the women's open division on the North American Snowboarder Cross Cup; she ended the 2017-18 Nor-Am season 3rd in the Women's Junior Division, 6th in the Women's Open Division, and as the youngest athlete in the top 10. Emma's commitment to her dryland training is well beyond her years. There is no "off season" for this girl. Emma works as hard in the summer as she does in the winter, she hits impressive [weight] numbers in the gym and backs it up with impeccable form.
The 2018 United Sates Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) National Championships wrapped up last week in Lake Placid, NY. CVA was well represented with Big Dogs competing in Alpine, Snowboard and Freeski events.
The time-honored tradition of CVA student-athletes supporting the athletes of the Special Olympic Winter Games continued this year. An eagerly anticipated and much enjoyed event every February, our student-athletes were once again on-hand for all the fun and unique camaraderie the games are known for.
